I have a question about Troubleshooting
Driver Problems:
Hello All -
I recently purchased a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 external hard drive to add to
my current setup. I am running a Compaq Presario 6020us, with an AMD Athlon@1.6ghz,
Windows XP Home (SP 2). The hard drive is supposed to be backwards compatible with
USB 1.1, but when I tried to install it, I got an error message that Windows could
not find the software (drivers). After some unsuccesful trouble-shooting, I contacted
Maxtor. The Maxtor rep came to the conclusion that this drive would not work with
my computer, unless I installed a USB 2.0 card. 24 hours and $30.00 later, I installed
said card. Now, I am getting the same error message for the card as I was with the
drive- "Cannot Install the Hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary
software". I have un-installed and re-installed the card several times. I have searched
Microsoft.com for a fix. According to everything I have found, Service Pack 2 should
have the necessary drivers for USB 2.0 support. The USB PCI card was bought from
CompUSA, and is their own label. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some
help on resolving this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.
