Hi there,
I've just found this thread and have experienced this problem myself.
To date i've not found a real solution that is permanent, but much research has provided
me with some possible answers and patch ups that temporarily fix the problem.
The one fix that works for a while and is suggested by many is to delete the following
file: IconCache.db which can be found in either C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local
Settings\Application Data or in the user account insead of the administrator account.
Upon rebooting this file will be recreated and the icons should return. If not on
the reboot, they will on the next reboot.
The suggestion is this file becomes corrupt for some reason and deleting it resets
it.
One thing many have suggested is to get rid of tweakui as that is a common cause
of this problem as there's some conflict with it and windows.
Unfortunately i've uninstalled tweakui and cleaned it from the registry and it still
seems to be there, so something somewhere is still starting it, yet i'm unable to
figure that one out just yet.
I have found that when i turn on my computer and go and do something and return to
it letting it sit on the log in screen for a while, it's less likely to forget the
tray icons, but even that isn't always the answer.
Another thing i'm noticing when this happens is some programs that start and show
an icon in the taskbar also show a minimised icon on the bar as if the program is
started and opened, but minimised, yet right clicking the icon gives no options to
close or restore the item. To fix this i've had to shut down the program and restart
it manually and it goes to the system tray as it should.
I'll have a look at some of the other suggestions and ideas and see if any of those
fix this problem for me or not.
As i'm due for a reinstall sometime soon as i've done some software testing and have
slowed my system down with a lot of garbage from it, i'm happy to test any new idea
or theory and see if it helps or fixes it.
