My computer has worked always worked in S3 (everything turned off) standby mode up
until a week ago. It started only working in S1 (hard drive powers down but fans
on). It just so happened that reinstalled my USB mouse around the time the problem
started happening and, by default, when you install a USB mouse windows sets it to
allow it to bring the computer out of standby (Mouse properties in Device Manager
under the Power Management tab). I unchecked the box and it works fine now.
Microsoft kinda touched on it in the following link http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841858
"To prevent a negative end-user experience, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 modify
the power capabilities that are returned by the BIOS. Therefore, the system only
supports wake by using the USB for the S1 system power state. If there is no USB
device that is armed for wake from a system power state, the system enters the S3
system power state during standby."
Simply disable your USB devices from allowing the computer to return from standby.
