I have kicked this around too, not with WMP, but while gaming. What I don't understand is the two resolutions you are switching from are apples and oranges. I mean in the 1280x1024 mode your aspect ratio is 1.25 and as you write you are at 1.6 or 1680x1050. When I switch resolutions I make sure I pick one with the same aspect ratio. You are not. How do you get around that? There are two ways: tolerate letterboxing or stretch the screen. I don't like either way. Stretching distorts circles making them appear elliptical. Letterboxing is a waste of screen. While gaming I like a full screen with normal looking geometry. Just curious how you do that. Anyway to answer your question, from my experience especially games, it's always been a function of the software to allow you to pick the supported resolution you prefer. In gaming the higher the better with the trade off of slower frame rate.
