XP disk check won't run on bootup

I scheduled a full scan/fix of the file system on drive D:, which is where Windows XP is installed. Since this cannot be run while the OS is up, the system let me schedule it for the next boot-up. Unfortunately, it doesn't work - the scheduled scan/fix starts, then after a message saying the type of file system for drive D: is NTFS, it gives me an error message about being unable to lock/access/whatever the drive. It then proceeds to boot up normally. It now does this every time I boot up - there seems to be no way to look for and/or cancel a scheduled operation of this sort (bringing up the "Tools" in explorer doesn't show any indication that this operation is scheduled, though it would happily let me schedule another scan). So, there are two annoyances in one here: 1. Why the sam hill isn't the scan/fix operation running? 2. How can I cancel this operation so that it doesn't slow my boot up every friggin' time I reboot? Thanks...
