I do have a USB external disk but it too is off except during the week ends when I do the backups. I saw the article about the regit edit thing and did that on the laptop. Current setting for IRPStack size is 18. There is no entry for this on the desktop, and I haven't changed is since the desktop "sees" the shared laptop files.
