VMM32.VXD), the Windows NT Kernel (a.k.a. Executive + HAL + Win32 Kernel Mode API), the Linux kernel, the UNIX kernel, etc., etc., etc.? Kernel = Operating System Low-level Core. I'm not engineer, but I know what I am talking about, and you don't. Search on the Web for it if you have any doubts. Have you ever heard of Windows, by the way?
