I don't remember if SPF does that automatically. Maybe, if it doesn't then you can
switch off Windows Firewall manually. Also, you can switch its service to manual
startup so it won't run uselessly. It's called "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS)" in xpsp2.
SPF works fine with its default settings but it won't hurt to do a little hardening.
In its options, the "Network Neighborhood" tab disable all since you don't use windows
file sharing. And if this doesn't appear too complicated, create two Advanced Rules
to block ports:
135,137-139,445,500,1024-1030,4500,5000
incoming traffic, all hosts, protocols TCP and UDP (that's why you need two rules).
These are used by some windows components which you don't currently use. By doing
this you block any eventual exploitation of a M$ bug by some hacker or worm. It happened
before, that's why firewalls are considered so important. The above will also prevent
some alerts from appearing since advanced rules never trigger alerts.
Some programs (or features) need server-style access to the Internet. That is, to
wait for incoming connections and answer to them. Yahoo Messenger's "super webcam"
is one of these programs (TCP port 5100), but that's only one example. An advanced
rule is the answer for this, you can allow only a specific program to listen on a
specific port...
SPF will initially bug you with questions about allowing or not programs to go on
the net. Until it learns, but when it will detect a change in a program (e.g. as
a result of an upgrade) it will ask again.
