XP installation problem

I have been trying to install XP on a fresh SATA harddrive because my old one was
infected with a virus and I just couldn't get rid of it. I was trying to install
XP on the new drive and it always stops right when it says 'windows setup' in the
blue screen. The virus I had was "in the memory" and would it be possible that when
I formatted the new drive, it was somehow affected? The guy at the computer store
said that I probably had a bad stick of ram. (I have P4 2.4 with PC2700 2x512mb)
I tried one at a time and it was still the same. I am not an expert, but I am not
a complete newbie at this either. I have done this many many times. I just can't
figure out why. Please help! I hope all this makes sense.
