Drivers won't help; it's Windows that's broken. You need to perform an "upgrade/repair" 
install of Windows XP to fix it (which, as I said before, may not be possible with 
the disks provided by Hewlett-Compaqard).  The basic Windows sound hardware interface 
has gotten screwed up somehow, and you can reinstall drivers until your hair turns 
white, but it won't work.

Thus, legacy drivers won't work, the "right" drivers won't work, and neither will 
anything else. I'd venture to guess that even adding a USB sound device won't produce 
any sound.
