After XP repair installation, should I install SP2 first?

When my Norton crashed, I ended up having to do an XP repair installation. (Norton
is up and running again). But when I ran SP2 (after running other MS XP updates)
it crashed the system. I could not restart normally. I removed SP2 and it worked
but I did another repair installation to clean all the other updates out to get a
fresh start. Should I run SP2 first? My guess is that most of the other updates
will be included in SP2. Is that correct?
I have not done anything since the last repair installation except try to set a system
restore point. System Restore does not work but it is installed an running in services.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Oh! When I ran the updates after the first XP repair installation, I was able to
get optional updates which I could not get since an MS researcher walked me through
a reformat and XP reinstallation. After my XP repair installation, I could get those
(good!) with the exeption of .NET Framework 1.1 which fails. An MS tech told me
to just uninstall that from my system a couple weeks ago because I don't need it
but it turns out that I do need it. My backup software, for one thing, needs it.
