First, verify that your system is virus and malware free by doing at least two online
scans:

Then, give this a shot:
Click Start, Run, then type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and click OK or hit
enter.
However, my guess is that your best (but most time-consuming) solution will be a
wipe and clean installation. Make a slipstreamed XP CDROM to integrate SP2 into
your CD (if it is not already integrated), then offload your data, disconnect from
the internet, and do a clean installation.
