re: Question about 'Windows Installer Often Appears When I Start an Application' Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 11:15 pm Windows XP Annoyances Discussion Forum Posted by whistletown (2 messages posted) I not only get the Installer dialog box, etc. but I also get the error message, "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" when I try to follow the steps in the Microsoft Knowledge Base doc 290301. I've been able to get the program to my Desktop, but when I go thru the procedure to "Intall Now" this error comes up and the installation comes to a halt. I suspect some other bug in the mess because I'm getting that type of error and shutdowns of many of my applications on this XP system with Office 2000. In fact it was the "needs to close" errors that I've been trying to overcome for several days, before the Installer went kookie. This is far worse than annoying. I'll appreciate good advice to lick this problem.
