The problem is not with XP or your computer. It is with all the junk you have running
(probably put on by Compaq) when you try to shut down. Get a handle on your startup
programs with msconfig or startup.cpl or similar. Get rid of the factory "trial"
stuff which is running in the background and chewing up bandwidth as it links to
home base.
