Monitor only running in Safe Mode

I have a Dimension 4300 using Windows XP. About a year ago I bought a SONY Flat
Panel monitor and it worked fine.
A couple of weeks ago I would get black screens and the monitor would go into power
save. I decided to reformat the hard drive.
Now, I can only get the monitor to work in Safe Mode. When attempting to boot into
Normal Mode, it is a black screen. The monitor works great in Safe Mode.
I am not too familiar with computers. What should I be doing?
