windows explorer crashes when I access my external hard drive

My system:
Win XP Pro SP2
P4 2.8 GHz
512 MB RAM
USB 2.0 ports **but they only show up as 1.1 (they are manufactured by SiS and I
just installed the newest 2.0 driver and they still dont work)

I have a Buffalo 250GB USB 2.0 hard drive. My friend used it first, loading a bunch
of files to share with me (he is running Windows XP). When I connect it to my machine
it gives me the red access light (as opposed to green) and causes Windows Explorer
to crash after about 7 seconds. Sometimes I can move files off of it to my computer
and sometimes they work and sometimes they dont.

A weird thing happened. I repaired Windows (basically reinstalled it) and the drive
worked! Once I installed SP2, however, it went back to the way it was. Anyway,
I am stuck. This is a plug n' play device that requires no driver and isn't protected
by password.

Any ideas what's going on???
