Access Denied to Backup folders in External Drive

Hi,
Here's the Beef: Created a backup of a mates HDD (using WindowsXP's built-in backup
utility) to my External Drive so as to do a reformat & fresh install of XP. The problem
is now I can't access the backup file which I saved to a folder named "Backup" in
the External Drive. Anyone know how I can access this folder again? This is the message
I get when trying to access it:

Funny thing is this isn't the first time it's happened. I created a different folder
(& files within it a few months ago) in the External Drive through my Home PC & those
can't be accessed by any other PC either. I can still view the folder's contents
through my home PC but the files seem empty. Through explorer all the files look
intact & still take up the same amount of space but when opened, I get blanks???
Someone out there must surely know how this can be fixed.
TIA guys (& gals)
