Thank you everyone for your generous help. Gargoyle, you put me on the right track.
Since I seem to have a different My Downloads in every one of the folders I first
mentioned I decided to search Firefox for the place where I could designate one of
the destinations that you suggested. In case any one else is interested, I found
it in Tools, Options, Downloads and then selected Desktop from the 3 choices given.
I still would like to know if I can
get rid of most of the file headings that have various versions of My Documents in
them. Maybe I should start a new thread with that question, but if anyone is reading
this who may know why I should keep them I would like to hear about it. Many thanks
