Not a solution to the problem, but a workaround. If your desktop items, taskbar,
and start button have all disappeared, do ctrl-alt-delete to bring up task manager.
In Task Manager, click File > New Task (run), and type explorer.exe.
Doesn't help explain the cause of the problem, but at least helps with symptoms.
Might get you in to save your work anyway.
