I had all the same symptoms as most of the posters in this thread, and have spent
a LOT of time reading through here and many other help forums to solve these issues
(sluggish Explorer, empty Device Manager, no networking options, etc.).
Finally, I got pointed to removing Microsoft Security Update KB905749. It worked!
My system is back to full funtionality now.
The only concern I have now is that KB905749 may be slated to be part of future "roll-up"
and/or Service Packs.
A further question is why this security patch so adversely affected some users and
not others. Which settings triggers KB905749 to block local access to PnP features?
