This seems to have done the trick!
A loss of sound was also a part of my problem. Once my Device Manager was re-populated
I had to download my sound driver again and go through some other steps to make it
my default sound device. With one exception, things seem to be back to normal.
I had to change how I receive Windows updates. With the automatic setting, MS wanted
to immediatley re-install the offending security update. I had to change this to
manual so that I can unselect it when installing updates.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. I think there are more than one
causes to the problem but I eventually found the once that applied to me.
