FYI, to anybody who was also searching for BcUpdate2, I finally found it. After my
previous post, I again googled "Bcupdate2", and started reading the pages more fully.
One site suggested to call Microsoft's free Product Support at 800-936-4900 and give
them the specific Article # from the KnowledgeBase (# 320397) that describes BcUpdate2
as a "Hot Fix" for NTFS problems with WinXP and other Windows versions.
The phone call took less than a half hour, although I had to speak to three different
people. The first two were Customer service folks whose main function seemed to
be to take my name and give me a case #, and finally hand me over to a Tech Support
guy.
It was worth the wait to hear the solution offered by the MICROSOFT support person,
which had me nearly ROFL:
GOOGLE "download Bcupdate2".
The first link was to geek.com, which led to poseidon.org.uk (no longer a valid site),
which and finally led to:
http://www.protostorm.com/bcupdate2.html
This offers both versions 1 (for early opSys such as Win NT4.0) and 2 (for WinXP,
2000 and later).
The description at this site makes me feel a lot more comfortable that the problem
is really an NTFS flaw, and not some sneaky virus that will reinstall itself the
minute I turn my back.
However, I was scratching my head in bemusement when I realized that it must have
cost Microsoft at least $50-$100 to solve my problem, and that their solution required
using their chief rival's search engine to find a 3rd-party site where I could download
the program.
It seems weird that the knowledge base doesn't have a direct link to a Microsoft
site where I could have downloaded the program directly (saving time for me and money
for Microsoft).
Just imagine how rich Bill Gates would be if Monopolists'R'Us were efficient! [g]
