I just had this problem with my XP Device Manager being blank. Removing KB05749
didn't do the trick for me. The culprit in my case was a nasty adware that was installed
on my system. It's called apropos. Not sure how I got it. Probably some shareware
I installed had this adware included in the installation. Sneaky! It was constantly
popping up ads when I'd surf the net with IE. It drove me nuts! Adware and Seek
& Destroy couldn't see it. I finally found it was on my system using a trial version
of Spy Sweeper. I'd have Spy Sweeper remove it, but the darn thing would be back
again after the next reboot! I finally found a utility that removes apropos once
and for all at DSLReports.com, in this thread...
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14678998
see the message by CalamityJane. It has the link to download the AproposFix and
installation instructions. The fix must be run in XP Safe Mode as apropos has registry
settings that allows itself to be reinstalled upon reboot. I think it evens runs
as a service. The fix worked great. Apropos is gone finally. And guess what?
My device manager is now showing everything again.
Before you run this apropos fix, I suggest downloading the trial version of Spy Sweeper
from www.webroot.com Do the system scan and it'll tell you if you have apropos
on your system. If you do, download and run that Aproposfix.
Hope this helps...
