Thanks John, I've been trying to fix this problem for the past 3 days, and finally
got it! I first noticed my LAN connection was missing from the notification tray,
even though I was connected to it and the internet. I checked Network connections
and both LAN and IEEE1394 connections were missing (which lead me to an MS knowlege
base page), then I found Device manager was empty, My Computer was really slow, and
my printer/scanner was no longer available.
I tried all of the above sugggestions, apart from yours, but to no avail.
I went looking through the registry and found that HKLM/System/CurrrentControlSet/Enum/Root/LEGACY_W3SMGMT
gave an error, and I could not delete or change privileges for it in any way.
I used SpySweeper to find and remove Apropos, which did not fix the problem. In my
case it did not re-install itself again on startup though, so (again) I thought it
wasn't the same problem as yours.
I then went and un-installed all Windows updates up to the same date of KB05749,
but again this did not fix the problem either.
Then had a look at the link for the next steps of your fix, saw that it mentioned
adchannel.contextplus.net, and remembered seeing something like that while un-installing
the windows updates. Sure enough in Add/Remove programs there was ContextPlus. I
clicked on Change/Remove to see if there was anything I could do with it and it hung
my PC :-( Pressed reset button and hey presto - everything is back to normal :-)
Checked Add/Remove programs and ContextPlus was gone. Out of interest, I also checked
the registry again, and the LEGACY_W3SMGMT key is no longer corrupt. So I think this
explains atleast why the symptoms are the same for the other fixes above.
I assume it had nothing to do with un-installing windows updates, so I am going to
try re-installing them.
Thanks again.
