I had the same problem on a Windows XP PC. Also the following:
Opening My Computer took ages.
Visiting a web page entered in the address bar took ages.
Occasional crashes.
No network connection showing in 'Network Connections' window.
The PC had loads of spyware, but I had run Microsoft AntiSpyware, AdAware and Spybot,
and the problem remained.
I then tried Spyware Doctor, which found some extra things, removed them, said it
would need to run again in safe mode, and removed some more. All problems now gone.
The Spyware it found was:
Block-Checker
EliteBar
MySearch
Trojan.Delf.IT
TargetSavers
SahAgent
AproposMedia (in a restore point)
Trojan.Crypt.T (in a restore point)
Common Components for 180Solutions items (but in a quarantine from another spyware
scanner)
I am surprised that Microsoft AntiSpyware missed so much, and impressed with Spyware
Doctor. Unfortunately you now have to pay to get it to remove stuff, but you can
do a scan for free.
In future such cases I will be running Spyware Doctor and/or Webroot Spy Sweeper
in addition to AdAware, Spybot & MS AntiSpyware.
