On investigation their device manager appeared empty. Booting in safe mode showed it to be populated. A couple of conflicts, nothing major. Everything that was tried including removing recent security updates failed to resolve the problem. I installed Spyware Doctor and scanned in safe mode. This found all kinds of things the MS spyware beta and Norton Anti-Virus missed. After removing the offending nasties, the pc was rebooted, they were able to connect to the 'net and I got a free dinner!
