Since you've gone through the trouble and feel to do it, go for it. It's something
beneficial, so it's all good.
The reason they quit archiving old threads 'was' it has/had an affect on the site's
performance. Don't ask me how. I would think the opposite were true. I recall the
webmaster saying something about it a few years ago, when performance was at it's
worst!
Information and solutions become outdated, and often there are new and/or better
ways to resolve things. The new posts added to this are unrelated to the original
problem, and like you said, they need to plow through dozens of posts. It would surely
be better to have newer threads with issues that are relevant to more current problems
and possible causes for the problems, I think.
That's why I think after a thread gets so long, it's pointless for anyone
to be able to add to it. If it's Read Only, they can still benefit from what's already
there. If not, it may encourage them to post a new message. I quit worrying about
it along time ago.
