Thank you! I have spent hours trying everything and only your (Kelly's) solution
worked. I should point out some things I learned that may not be obvious:
1. The Task Manager CPU meter icon missing is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PROBLEM than
all the other people's icon problems, and has nothing to do with UPnP or startup
timing.
2. I noticed that the Task Manager problem only appears in the Classic Style, and
switching to the Windows XP Style always solved it. This didn't help me because
I can't stand the XP style...
Also, just to summarize a clarification mentioned elsewhere, UPnP is *not* the
same thing as Plug & Play, which is about hardware and has been around since Windows
95. UPnP is new with WinXP and is about Windows discovering network devices automatically.
You can safely turn it off and still have hardware installations work as before.
You may even want to since UPnP can be a source of security and other problems.
For example, when I recently installed XP again, XP silently and cheerfully found
my new UPnP router and RECONFIGURED IT. Voila, no more Internet. Only took five
hours or so to figure that one out. Thanks, Windows Development Team!
