JAR / zip, not default action

I see how clone the .zip entry in the registry to make the .jar behave exactly like
.zip, but that isn't what I want. I want to leave the default java execution behavior
alone and add a new action which uses zipfldr. I've noticed that other people have
tried this and failed. Has anyone succeeded?
