I recently read a tip that folks won't follow the branches of an old thread very
far to find a current response, so thought perhaps it was better to start a new/follow-up
discussion as the original has been going since 2002 and seems rather abandoned now.
I've referenced the old title, but updated the Subject line to reflect my still
unresolved problem.
After a drive-by auto update, our laptop audio was repaired with a System Restore
(no missing Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator involved,) then we moved on
to fix a brand new custom-built w/onboard sound -- it now has a PnP (Swenum) and
audio thanks to the words of wisdom in the previous thread, but is still locking
up every fifteen minutes after an XP repair following uninstallation of SP2 (which
immediately preceded the loss of audio and annihilation of the PnP.)
Yet another victim of auto-updates (second custom-built system running SP1 - three
years old/onboard sound) is waiting in the wings for a fix:
Driver install directly from the VIA site indicates the sound card isn't enabled
in the BIOS, although it is and has been for over two years. Only the MS Kernel
System Audio Device is working -- the other three essential components (according
to the NAD thread) are grayed out. That includes MS Kernel Audio Splitter/Wave Audio
Mixer and WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver. I've uninstalled them, but they
disappear never to resurface again until I uninstall/reinstall the AC'97.
When the third machine went down, I called MicroSoft and was actually granted free
sessions with the techs. They agreed that it was obviously an update glitch, but
had no record of it, even though someone in the other thread mentioned the fact that
MS hadn't been able to affect either a prevention or a cure. Two techs and many,
many hours later, I personally fixed the audio problems on two separate machines
using the advice in the original NAD thread; the techs at MS seem to have given up
on the third system (even though I gave 'em a link to Annoyances.org!) If MS can't
reconcile its own in-house-activated problems, then I suppose it's up to Obi-wan
to help me because right now, he's my only hope.
