Bios Menu on startup, no CD-ROM or DVD drives

According to the many questions on this that come through Annoyances, XP doesn't
appear to be very good at keeping track of optical drives compared to any other OS
version. I don't tend to pay close attention to the software questions in this (XP)
Annoyances forum, so if some repeatable fix is being covered in any of the dozens
of threads, I ignored it so far.
But the forum *DOES HAVE* search capability, and you can look at some of the
many threads easily enough that way. Seeing the "1.7 MHz" speed of the PC you have,
I did have a hardware - related suggestion: if your PC is as much as three years
old, the "CMOS" battery might be weakening, and not keeping good track of everything
in Setup.
So, if the search doesn't help after all, I'll ask if you have noticed any time loss,
or calendar loss, besides this pair of "missing" optical drives? If so, you need
to put in a new battery.
