XP startup problem

Hi, I'm running xp home and switched on to find no icons or task bar on the screen.
Restarted and it was ok but only sometimes. Being dumb, I tried a recovery/repair
with my xp disc but things seem to be worse now coz i've lost updates and the screen
is displaying "this page is unavailable off line". Maybe i've fiddled tooooo much
and upset something but i'm lost so any help would be appreciated
