The way Windows sorts files

Windows is sorts files (for example in Explorer) alphabetically ie:
file1.doc
file10.doc
file2.doc
file20.doc
file23.doc
file3.doc
Does anybody know how to change this so it shows what I think correctly;
file1.doc
file2.doc
etc, etc.
By some miracle I was able to change this with a combination of a function key and 
something else on one of my boxes but I don't know how.
