Steve, thanks for your input! I'm running Norton and ad-aware and don't appear to have had any problems to date with spyware etc. I've done my first full format and re-install, struggled through missing drivers and all the associated problems that we computer dumbos seem to encounter and got the damn thing almost working ok.......BUT! On normal start up i get no icons or mouse, just the wallpaper. Then i have to restart, F8, safe mode, "start in last good configuration" and bingo....icons and mouse back and things are ok. Confusing and frustrating!
