I am running a Hp compaq nx9005 XP SP2 and I am had the same probs as everyone else.
First of all moan about Microsoft in everyway possible for being awkward with their
software but then apologise cos they have actually made a damn good and friendly
easy to use environment, they buggered up a few bits but give them a break, their
only human.....apparently.
The only way to get around it whilst still using Upnp and SSDP is to make sure they
run manually, add in this registry setting (copied from Brents post, thanks)
Run the window registry editor (START, RUN, regedit)
You need to create a new String Value called "systray" in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Then give in the value: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\systray.exe"
To do all this:
1. START, RUN, type "regedit", hit enter
2. Once in the Registry Editor, navigate the left directory tree to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
3. Then right click on the right window pane, click new, then string value.
4. Give the new string value the name "systray"
5. Your new value should now have the name "systray", the type "REG_SZ", and no data.
6. Right click on your new "systray" value and click "modify".
7. Now give "systray" the value data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\systray.exe"
8. Click ok and close the Registry Editor.
9. Restart your computer.
Next you must perform this registry change
(this copied from the Clumsy Hamster, thanks)
1. Open up the registry (run > regedit)
browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE >
2. Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > policies
3. Create a new key named "Explorer" without the quotes (right click > New > Key)
4. Create a new DWORD Value named "NoTrayItemsDisplay" without the quotes (right
click > New > DWORD Value)
5. Modify the NoTrayItemsDisplay and make sure the value is 0 (right click > Modify)
Once these have been done ensure that "systray" in msconfig>startup is enabled by
the tick box.
By doing these steps you have also ensured the UPnP is still functioning for the
networking side of things (being my job I kinda needed it)
Restart the machine and problem solved.
