I just solved this as well, the person who's computer had this problem had an audio
card installed 2 weeks before it started going wrong(why it took 2 weeks to go wrong
is a mystery 2 me) but all i did was disable onboard audio at the BIOS (hit F2 or
DEL at startup to get to BIOS) and it works perfectly now.
Only taken me 4 hours to sort out :( I should have known this computer was going
to be a pain when i found a crisp packet in the chassis.
