Fix is three stages
First, to restore Preview capability to Windows Explorer:
Create a .reg file in notepad with the following contents:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellEx]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"
Note: Repeat ShellEx pair for each root class (image extension) you want to repair
Save the file as ShellEx.reg or something similar. Double click on it to update your
registry.
Step two, to repair the Windows Picture and FaxViewer launch (default double-click
action).
Enter at the Command/Run prompt:
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
Finally, if you have changed default applications to offset the loss of FaxViewer,
you will need to set the default OPEN action back to Windows Picture and FaxViewer
(see earlier posts in this thread).
The Ctrl E function of WPFV will follow the EDIT action associated with that file
extension.
It appears this functionality was disabled by an MS Patch application, though I have
yet to read which one it was.
