A patch-em-up idea...
Ok, I've had this problem (the volume control disappearing for no reason at bootup
time), and here's what I've come up with...
at first I blamed Yahoo, AOL, and SUN JAVA (Which by the way if you remove sun java
you should get significantly fewer popups) but came to the conclusion that I have
absolutely no idea what the problem is. So, a temporary, but not complete solution
would be to put a shorcut to the audio control applet in the quicklaunch bar. Usefull
only if you want somewhat quick access to the mute control. Also, another problem
I noticed (seemed to happen only at yahoo) is that the mute feature does not always
work. I would put it on mute and someone or something would take it off.
Hope this helps. And hopefully there will be an official solution soon. (some people,
myself included) like to keep a fully functional and fully visible original/genuine
volume control icon in the systray at all times.
PS: I've noticed the problem on all versions of XP Pro.
