The quickest way to resolve an empty Device Manager, and the most drastic (I've done
it on four machines and they all survived!) is log on as Administrator open REGEDIT
and go to Local Machine, System, CurrentControlSet. Right click Enum and take
ownership and ensure Administrator has full rights. Now the scary bit. Delete the
entire Enum tree! Under CurrentControlSet create a new key called Enum. Close the
registry and reboot your PC - and cross your fingers! When the PC boots up, PnP
kicks in a repopulates the Device Manager. All I can say is it works for me, but
no promises anyone!
