Same problem; no icons in System Tray,"hide inactive icons" option grayed out in TaskBar properties. Tried every suggestion I found on Google and none worked for me. But installing SysTrayX, from: http://www.systrayx.com, (a system tray "organizer"), did. It "reactivated" the System Tray and after re-booting my icons were back. (No, I don't sell this product and had never heard of it before.) I suspect that whatever caused an unplanned reboot prior to loss of my icons also corrupted/re-wrote part of the registry and SysTrayX's installation program corrected the error in the registry.
