wasn't given product key

Last week I build my own system and ordered a copy of XP Home with it, so it would
be nice and legit.
Upon installing it I checked for the product key and couldn't find a certificate
of authenticity, and there was none. Turns out they gave me a "to be sold with a
new system only" version with a nice little notice that says "The PC Manufacturer
is required to attache the Certificate of Authenticity label to the computer system
prior to delivery."
Unfortunately, the geniuses who sold me the disc and the components didn't give me
a product key.
Any ideas how I can get around this? I've been trying to find a key generator (why
not? I paid $120 for this goddamned software and I want to use it) but couldn't
find any. That was quite a shock.
I assume a call to Microsoft won't help me any (Yeah, yeah, you "bought" the copy
but they didn't give you the product key, now if you excuse me I have to go play
the world's smallest violen).
Anyone know how I can get this working without the hassle of mailing back the software,
waiting for them to receive it, charge me a 15% restocking fee and then charge me
again to send another one out?
Cheers.
