Hi all
Here's a simple solution that's worked for me (none of the other options worked):
I simply reinstalled Windows Media Player and allowed it to be the default player
for everything. It stopped explorer crashing immediately.
This says to me that the problem is indeed to do with app associations for files.
It certainly is the simplest solution I have come accross despite HEAPS of forum
searching.
