connecting camera devices

Shouldn't win xp sp2 automtically recognize most camera devices when plugged in through
usb. I thought that xp had most drivers for such devices. I have a samsung mini dv
camcorder and a kodak digital camera and each opens the "add new hardware" wizard
when connected. I have all but given up on the computer recognizing the camcorder,
via firewire, but I thought it would recognize the digitl camera without installing
any software or drivers.
I also tried connecting a wireless mouse to the computer and couldn't get the computer
to recognize that either, after installing all the software and drivers.
I am wondering if there is a problem with my xp, and if there is a way to fix, if
I am missing something.
