Mouse Won't Work, Computer Slow

I just bought my computer 4 weeks ago. I have a cordless mouse. When I try to click on something I have to click a minimum of 10-15 times before it opens something up. I've defraged, checked the mouse settings, closed out some start up programs, cleared all the temp, cleared all the cookies, history, etc. Changed batteries in the mouse, it is located near the plug in for the cordless thing, I have 92% free space, yet it still won't let me use the mouse properly. I've called HP, now they want to charge me to walk me through fixing this thing, even though under warranty. I also have system restore turned off. But it seems like there is something running all the time. It's not the fan on the computer either, it sounds as if I have a CD in the drive and it's trying to load a program, the sound does not come from the CD drive, that's just an example so you have an idea of what I'm talking about. It sounds like a program is trying to load up. Can someone please tell me what to do so this mouse will work properly.
