Your advice here was VERY helpful. Here is MY tale of Mup.sys woe:
1. I was running XP just fine on an AMD processor box that I had upgraded from Win
2K
2. Suddenly without any warning it crashed, and then after that it would only boot
into SAFE MODE.
3. After much screwing around I bit the bullett and started over- low-level format,
XP Pro re-install. Much to my dismay - the SAME problem was still there.
4. I low-level formatted again, tried XP again, same result.
5. I low-level formatted again and re-installed Win 2K. SAME result! Now this is
REALLY getting annoying.
6. I decide ALL is lost. I buy
a new motherboard
new memory (old was not compatible)
an AMD 3200+ processor
new 200GB drive
new CASE AND power supplies
at this point the only semblence to the original system is some cables, the CD ROM,
and the XP disc
7. As you probaby guessed- SAME ERROR!!! ACK.. I give up. I'm thinking about making
it a linux box but I already have a fast linux box so that's a huge chore I'd prefer
to avoid basically making the linux box a windows box and visa versa. So basically
at this point I'd DOA, and about $600 poorer
8. I search everywhere- Microsoft knowledge base, other sites, friends, etc. I do
reg edits, swap memory, disable drivers, take out AGP and replace with PCI Video
,etc etc. NOTHING works
9. I buy FIX IT and try other virus software - no help
10. I try all sorts of MSCONFIG changes- still won't boot.
11. I try to disable a bunch of ACPI stuff - no help
12. I screw around in the BIOS with virtually every change I can try
13. Then FINALLY I google it again tonight and notice this thread. I start reading.
14. I tried the "disable Mup.sys" suggestion and it fails
15. I try the swap memory sticks- no help
16. Then I see the person suggests "disable Mup". I try that. It seems to change
something. After 2 months of screwing around with this problem I have little confidence
I will ever solve it. But I reboot.
17 WHOA!! It booted into windows for the first time in months!! This looks promising!!
18. I'm now installing mobo and soundcard and network drivers.. This might just work!
Thanks guys- you're more helpful than the zillion-$$ MS support!
