This has bugged me for days - thank you guys for helping fix the problem. It ws
only after reading through all the post and keeping seeing plug and play issues coming
up that something clicked.
My solution that has solved this issue (in my case battery meter, volume icon missing)
was:
Start
My Network Places
Under networked tasks I clicked on 'hide icons for networked UPnP devices'
XP went through the component installation process - I then rebooted and everything
is back to normal.
If I hadn't seen all the posts re plug and play I wouldn't have thought of trying
this. Hope it helps some others
