Started with no sound, and had yellow cross against WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver – Error 38, Driver could not be loaded. Uninstall/Reinstall resulted in the ‘not suitable for this platform error’ for a device called ‘MEDIA’. So I tried the swenum de/reinstall (great instructions btw – good job), and tried to (re)install WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver, the install still didn’t work. So I had ‘Unknown Device’, ‘MEDIA’ in Sound, Video and game Controllers, and no sound. I used Update Driver on the Unknown Device, allowed it to look on Windows update, and it worked – I now have sound back ! (Now I need to Ghost onto a new HDD because of the bad sectors I keep finding, I think this is the real source why I lost it in the first place.)
