My parents sadly reported this same problem to me with their computer. Suddenly would
not boot and hung at mup.sys in safe mode. I tried various things listed here, the
bios, usb, etc… to no avail. I finally got into repair mode off the Windows XP cd
and did a chkdsk /r and a fixbootcfg and that solved the problem. I didn’t do a fixmbr
or fixboot because both resulted in a warning that I had a non-standard mbr and the
procedure would likely wreck the file system and I really didn’t feel like rebuilding
their pc right now. I had the enumeration error when attempting a dir at the command
line and also I got a registry corruption message when I tried to disable mup. chkdsk
did report there were errors fixed but it didn’t elaborate. Afterwards, I downloaded
the Western Digital HD Diagnostic Tool and the SMART drive passed. It seems like
this problem was a fluke. They were using the computer normally and shutting it down
normally. Nothing had been changed as far as hardware or software. I did get the
solution from a post here though. Great reading material!
