First off, to anyone reading this, thanks for taking the time to help! (Also, please
note that I've tried to be as thorough as possible when describing my problem, to
make it easier for me to get help.)
Here's my problem: I've setup my Quick-Launch toolbar to dock to the left side
of my screen and auto-hide (for a variety of reasons including quick and easy access
to commonly-used programs). When it's working fine, and I hover my mouse by the
left border of the desktop, it looks like this:

When it's not working, though, it looks like this:

Yes, that very faint gray vertical line to the left of my desktop is what should
be my quicklaunch bar -- it auto-hides just like it ought to, only when I hover near
the left border of my desktop, all I get is this weird gray line that pops out.
The icons aren't visible, and the area where the toolbar should pop-out is transparent
to whatever windows are beneath it.
Here's how I recreate the problem (note that I have a laptop with the ability
to extend my desktop to an external monitor):
1. Using just my laptop's screen, everything is fine. I boot into Windows XP
normally, no problems.
2. I connect up an external monitor, and in the display settings, set things
up to extend my desktop onto that monitor. After doing this, everything is still
fine.
3. Now, I stop extending my desktop onto the external monitor, and hit Apply
or OK. As soon as I do this and my extended desktop goes back to just being a normal
desktop on my laptop screen, the Quick-Launch toolbar goes weird (as described above).
I've recreated this problem on a friend's laptop, so I don't think the issue is
unique to my machine...has anybody encountered this sort of problem before?
