Dual channel doubles the data rate to the RAM, can be quite a performance boost for some operations and a noticeable increase in speed. However it is recommended that in dual channel mode you have matched memory modules, preferably sold that way (matched by the manufacturer or vendor).. More expensive but less possible problems in the long run IME.
